Dog Tip of the Day, Septembe 29

I am not sure what the best crate is for your dog.  I have the wire crates because I have been told the dog gets more ventilation in them. My only problem with the wire crate is what would happen in the event of an accident?  I am switching to a heavy duty aluminum crate made with thick aluminum tubing and aluminum panels on the sides and top.  I think I will feel better about having my dog in a sturdier container.  These crates are professional K9 crates designed for dogs that spend a lot of time in them.  They also have self locking doors which I like because I am always worried that I did not secure his door.  I will give updates on the Aluminum crates when I receive it.

Science Birthdays, September 29

Today is the birthday of Enrico Fermi, born in 1901, he opened the atomic age by working out the mathematics of the neutron. He immigrated to the United States from Italy during the Hitler years and built the first atomic reactor. When he received the Nobel Prize he wouldn’t wear the fascist uniform or give the salute.  He discovered that thermal neutrons, those that are slowed down are more effective in a controlled chain reaction. He died of cancer at age 53.

Dog Tip of the Day, September 28

I have been talking about leashes and collars the last few days.  A 30 foot long leash is a good leash to use when training your dog to come to you.  I think I have talked about them before, you put your dog into a sit, stay then walk away to the end of the 30 foot leash.  Your dog should stay there, and come to you when called.  This is also a good leash to use if you want to give the dog some more room to play catch or something where he doesn’t get to run very far, but allows you to have him under control. Just be careful with the 30 foot long leash that it isn’t wrapped around your leg or his leg when he runs after something.  A dog can get up a lot of speed and you wouldn’t want that leash jerking his neck, leg or your leg.

Dog Tip of The Day, September 27

When playing with German Shepherds, were cloths that you don’t mind getting ripped up.  I guess this could apply to most dogs.  They get a lot of slobber on the pant legs and shirt sleeves.  I am going to keep an old sweatshirt in the car, just for playing with Turbo.  He can make short work of shirt sleeves and he is not a biting dog.  For everyone else he licks them, for me, he isn’t happy unless my arm is in his mouth.  He doesn’t try to hurt me, but he is big and he sometimes gets too excited when playing.  If you were an old shirt you can play with them on their terms and not have to worry about your cloths.
