Dog Tip of The Day, October 31

Happy Halloween,

This could be a stressful evening for the pets, A lot of strange looking characters will be coming to your door.  Try not to let your dog bark at them.  Continually reassure the dog that it is ok.  Maybe sit on the porch with it on a leash.  Now, let’s think like a dog.  The Halloweeners come to your door for candy.  The dog starts barking.  You give the children treats and they go away.  What does the dog think?  It thinks it scared them away.  It was successful and it might even work the next time.  What do you do when the children leave? You probably give the dog a treat too.  What message did you just send?  Good job, you sure chased those kids away.  What should you do, with the dog on the leash, reassure it and if the dog is social (which it should be), let the visitors pet it.  Now when they leave, they are leaving on your terms not the dogs.  Remember, Chocolate is not good for dogs.

Dieting, October 31

Still at 186 today, which is what I expected.  It seems like I have been here for a while, but that is because I hit that 186 a few days early.  I am still optimistic I will drop to 185 soon, as long as I stay away from the candy bars tonight.  This is trick or treat night.  I am going to treat myself to some grapes instead.  A good tip is when there will be tempting foods around, have a healthy, low Calorie alternative that you like to have instead.  This will be especially important over Thanksgiving, Hunukkah and Christmas.

It was on this day in 1876 that a cyclone in India killed over 200,000 people.

It might be a stormy night for the Trick or Treater’s tonight in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.  The weather does not look that good today.

Dog Tip of The Day, October 30

Always remember that many dogs are working dogs.  They are treated much differently than most household pets.  They spend enormous amounts of time with their handlers and get many more and much better rewards for behavior.  I always worry because young children always want to come up and pet the dog, which he readily accepts, but I worry that I am training the children to lose a fear and respect for dogs that they need.  All dogs will not be as gentle and accepting as a well trained working dog.
