Science Birthdays, November 30

Today is the birthday of Ernst Chladni, born in 1756, he is considered the “Father of Acoustics for his research on vibrating plates and for calculating the speed of sound in different gases.  He also did pioneering studies of meteorites and is referred to as the “Father of Meteoritics”.

Tennant Smithson, born in 1819.       chemist           Lost both parents as a child and was self educated, his hobby was chemistry, he attended lectures by Black in 1781, He met Scheele and made friends with Berzelius, He showed that the diamond was all carbon, Wollaston was his assistant, he discovered iridium and osmium in 1803, he was killed when a small drawbridge gave way under him and his horse catapulted him into a ditch, his mother was also killed while riding a horse.

Dog Tip of The Day, November 30

Don’t forget tomorrow is hunting season in a lot of places. It is here in Pennsylvania.  Wear orange on yourself and your dog if you are out.  better yet, stay inside for a few days.

Dog Tip of The Day, November 29

Dogs like to go visit friends too, both human and k9.  My shepherd likes to go visit family because they bring the dogs and he gets to play. Keep this in mind. You wouldn’t want your dog keeping you from seeing your family or friends.

Today is the birthday of Karl Ziegler, born in 1898, he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on polymers, the Ziegler-Natta catalyst was used in the synthesis of polymers of alpha olefins or 1-alkenes.
