In many homes there will be a lot of candy and treats laying around. Chocolate is not good for dogs. Keep you eye on your kids candy and make sure the dog doesn’t get to it.  Watch that the kids don’t share too many candy bars with the dog.

It is a good idea when you choose a puppy, take a towel or small blanket with you to leave with the breeder. Have the breeder put this in with the mother to get her scent on it. When you bring the puppy home, you can use that blanket to comfort the pup.  Put the blanket in the crate where the puppy will sleep.

Start looking for a puppy obedience class early. If you miss the start it could be a long time before another puppy class is offered. Your puppy might not be a puppy anymore.  Puppy obedience classes are a great way to get your young dog around other young dogs and train this social behavior early.

Today is the birthday of Marcellin Pierre Bertholet, born on this day in 1827. Some will think this date is wrong because Wikipedia lists it at October 25, but the 27th is correct.  Bertholet synthesized many organic compounds from inorganic substances and disproved the vitalism theory. He also conducted experiments to measure gas pressure during hydrogen explosions. He is considered one of the greatest chemists of all time.
