Science Birthdays, September 19

Today is the birthday of William Kirby, born in 1759, he is considered the founder of entomology, which is the study of insects.  Remember there are an estimated 10 quintillion insects alive on earth at any one time. He died in 1850 at the age of 91.

Fritz Schaudinn, born in 1871, co-discovered the causative agent of syphilis with Erich Hoffmann in 1905, Spirochaeta palida, he died in 1906 at age 35.  He died of gastrointesinal amebic abcesses which he caused by experimentally ingesting amoeba.

Masatoshi Koshiba, born in 1926, was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for the detection of cosmic neutrinos.  He is 87.
