Science Birthdays, September 27

Today is the birthday of Hermann Kolbe, born in 1818, he developed the idea that organic compounds could be derived from inorganics through a substitution mechanism.  He introduced the idea of radicals and was the first to use the term synthesis.  He is most famous for the Kolbe Synthesis where salicylic acid is made from phenol. He entered college at the age of 13 at Gottingen.
