Science Birthdays, October 18

Today is the birthday of Christian Schonbein, born in 1799, he discovered ozone, from the Greek word for smell. He also discovered guncotton while working with acids in his kitchen and using his wife’s apron to clean his hands.  In 1847 one of his guncotton factories blew up killing 21 people. He died in 1868 at the age of 69, to his death he rejected the atomic theory.
