Today is the birthday of Leo Baekeland, born in 1863, he is best known for inventing Bakelite in 1907 and starting the modern plastic industry. He also invented Velox in 1893 which became the first photographic paper, he sold the rights to the process to George Eastman for a million dollars which he used for 55 more inventions. He became a recluse and was eating out of cans when he died, he was still wealthy though.
