Today is the birthday of Howard Ricketts, born in 1871, he investigated Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in 1906 and showed it to be spread by cattle ticks. He was first to isolate the organism that caused it. It seemed to be an organism between the size of viruses and bacteria. He contacted typhus while working on it and died at the age of 39 in 1910. The causative agent was named rickettsia in his honor.

Jacques Monod was born on this day in 1910 he worked on regulatory gene action.
