Today is the birthday of David Peakall, born in 1931, his research into the effects of DDE and DDT on eggshells led to a ban on DDT in the United States.  He proved that these chemicals caused a thinning of the eggshells.  Of course Rachael Carson’s book, Silent Spring played a key role also.
