Science Birthdays, May 17

Today is the birthday of Sir Joseph Lockyer, born in 1836, he studied the sun, was first to study the spectra of sunspots, named the chromosphere, named the element helium.

Jenner Edward, born in 1749,             physician,        found an inoculation for smallpox. He died in 1823 at age 74.

It is also the birthday of Odd Hassel born in 1897. He worked out the structure of cyclohexane and showed the impossibility of that and similar molecules laying in a single plane. He dies in 1981 at the age of 83.
