Science Birthdays, June 7

Today is the birthday of Sir James Simpson, born in 1811, he was an obstetrician who discovered the anesthetic properties of chloroform. He added “Young” to his name probably to flaunt his young age to his colleagues; he was only 18 years old when he completed his final examination for medical school. he died in 1870 at age 58, over 100 000 people lined the streets at his funeral procession.

6/7/1862          Phillip Lenard,             physicist, Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on cathode rays, active proponent of Nazi ideology, he died at age 84 in 1947.

6/7/1877          Charles Barkla,             physicist, Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on X-Ray spectroscopy, he died in 1944 at age 67.

6/7/1896          Robert Mulliken,          chemist, Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his molecular orbital theory, he died in 1986 at age 90.
