Science Birthdays, June 18

Today is the birthday of Charles Laveran, born in 1845, he discovered that the cause of malaria was a protozoan parasite.

6/18/1799        William Lassell,            astronomer, made his fortune as a beer brewer which gave him the money to pursue astronomy as a hobby. He built an observatory and discovered Triton, the largest moon of Neptune. He also co-discovered Hyperion, a moon of Saturn and Ariel and Umbriel, moons of Uranus. He died in 1880 at the age of 81.

6/18/1926        Allen Sandage,             astronomer, he determined the first reasonable accurate value for the Hubble constant and the age of the universe. He died in 2010 at the age of 84.
