Henrietta Leavitt, was born on this day in 1868, A Radcliffe graduate, she went to work of $10.50 a week at Harvard Observatory counting photographic images, She discovered a period-luminosity relation of cepheid variable stars that radically changed the theory of modern astronomy. She received little recognition during her lifetime.
Today is also the birthday of Victor Babes, born in 1854, he was one of the early bacteriologists, he died in 1926 at the age of 72.
Vincent Schaefer was born on this day in 1906, he seeded clouds with carbon dioxide, never finished high school, but received 14 patents, he died in 1993 at the age of 87.
