Dog Tip of The Day, July 7

Rin Tin Tin was a big part of my life growing up, it was my favorite TV show. I guess that’s why I like German Shepherds. The show made German Shepherds popular with many people, but there was a down side to that. They became so popular, everyone wanted one, which led to a huge increase in breeding. When the demand is high, it sparks an increase in supply. This breeds a lot of undesirable traits in dogs. Hip dysplasia, gastro intestinal problems and other health issues became common. It took a number of years of selective breeding from healthier shepherds to get this under control. When buying a puppy, try to check that the breeders are not breeding dogs that have these problems in their bloodlines.
