Science Birthdays, July 13

Today is the birthday of Stanislao Cannizzaro, born in 1826. He is famous for the Cannizzaro reaction. That is a way to decompose an aromatic aldehyde into the corresponding acid and alcohol by mixing it in a solution of potassium hydroxide with an alcohol solvent. He supported Avogado’s hypothesis in the Karlsruhe Congress.

Today is also the birthday of John Dee, born in 1527, he was an alchemist who believed that numbers were the basis of all things and the key to knowledge, that God’s creation was an act of numbering. When you get back into the 1500’s there are few noteworthy scientists.
