Today is the birthday of Geoffrey Wilkinson, born in 1921. He discovered the Wilkinson catalyst which is used industrially to hydrogenate alkenes. Putting hydrogen atoms on alkenes (unsaturated hydrocarbons) forms alkanes (saturated hydrocarbons). He also discovered ferrocene.
Also born on this day were:
1671 – Jacques D’Allonville, French astronomer and mathematician (d. 1732) He is noted for determining a method for precisely calculating the occurrence of solar eclipses.
1801 – Johannes Peter Müller, German physiologist (d. 1858).
