Today is the birthday of George Fitzgerald, born in 1851, he was an Irish professor of natural and experimental philosophy at Trinity College, he was a major figure in confirming Maxwell’s equations of the electromagnetic field. He died in 1901 at the age of 50.

Today is the birthday of John Scopes, born in 1900, he was the biology teacher in Dayton, Tennessee who was charged with teaching evolution in public schools. The case became known as the Scopes Monkey Trial. He was actually a lawyer, who was hired to violate the Butler Act to test its constitutionality. He was found guilty and fined $100, but the conviction was later overturned on a technicality. He died in 1970 at age 70.
