Science Birthdays, August 9

Today is the birthday of Amadeo Avogadro, born 1776,  he stated that the relationship between the masses of the same volume of different gases (at the same temperature and pressure) corresponds to the relationship between their respective molecular weights. Avogadro’s Number, the number representing a mole of a substance is named in his honor

Also born on this day was Erich Huckel, born in 1896, he is know for the Debye-Huckel theory of electrolyte solutions and also for the Huckel method of calculating molecular orbitals on π electron systems

Francesco Cetti, born in 1726 who wrote a four volume collection of quadripeds, birds, fish, insects and fossils

William Fowler, born in 1911, who wrote a paper on the synthesis of elements in stars.
