Science Birthdays, August 11

Today is the birthday of Erwin Chargaff, born in 1905 and known for Chargaff’s rules which led to the discovery of the DNA double helix.  He discovered that the amounts of adenine and thymine in DNA were always about the same as were the amounts of cytosine and guanine.  This led to the idea that they must be somehow paired. He died in 2002 at the age of 97.
