5/12/1803        Justus Liebig               chemist           His name is pronounced (lee bik) His father introduced him to chemistry because he liked to experiment with salts and pigments. Went on to study fulminates. Had a hard time getting educated in the post-Napoleonic period. He coined the term isomer and was friends with Wohler who revolutionized chemistry. He was very opinionated and quarrelsome. Wohler was the opposite. He was one of the great chemistry teachers of all time. He developed quantitative analysis of organic compounds and became interested in biochemistry, developing analytical techniques for blood, bile and urine. He was one of the first to experiment and suggest chemical fertilizers instead of manure which helped reduce epidemics and feed many people. He died in 1873 at the age of 70.

5/12/1895        William Giauque        chemist           discovered the isotopes of oxygen, he died in 1982 at age 86

5/12/1901        Sir Christopher Hinton           physicist          worked on designing projects to harness uranium. He died in 1983 at age 82

5/12/1906        Maurice William Ewing         geologist         know as Maurice or “Doc” showed the mid oceanic ridge, also had  a theory about ice ages in that they are caused by the arctic ocean freezing over. He died in 1974 at age 68

5/12/1910        Dorothy Hodgkin        chemist           she worked on X-ray diffraction and was one of the first to use a computer to solve a biological problem. she determined the three dimensional structures of cholesterol, penicillin, vitamin B12 and insulin, She died in 1994 at age 84
