Science Birthdays, July 31

Today is the birthday of Friedrich Wohler, born in 1800, he is often considered the founder of organic chemistry, because of the synthesis of urea in 1828 from inorganic compounds, called the Wohler synthesis, it disproved and undermined the Vital Force Theory which was believed for centuries, he died in 1882  at age 82

Today is also the birthday of John Canton, born in 1718, he verified Ben Franklin’s kite experiment and made important discoveries with electricity and artificial magnets.

Richard Oldham, born in 1858, discovered that the earth had a core, he also was the first to describe the existance of p-waves, s-waves and surface waves.

Paul Boyer, born in 1918, described the enzymatic reaction mechanism involved in the biosynthesis of adenosine triphosphate, better known as ATP.

Primo Livi, born in 1919, he was an Italian/Jewish chemist who wrote the book, The Periodic Table, The Royal Institute of Great Britain named it the best science book ever written.

Dog Tip of The Day, July 31

Dogs like to mark their territory.  They will go back and pee on the same tree every time they pass it.  Cats do the same thing and if you keep them in the house don’t them them get started on peeing on things. Pick up cloths and anything on the floor that will attract them.  Be sure you have a clean litter box or they will look elsewhere.

Science Birthdays, July 30

7/30/1641        Graaf Regnier de        anatomist, made important contributions to understanding the male reproductive system, he invented the syringe. he died in 1673 at the age of 32

7/30/1863        Ford Henry                  industrialist, with his belief in making cheap consumer goods with high wages for workers he became one of  the richest men in the world. He introduced the assembly line to produce the Model T Ford, he died in 1947 at age 83

7/30/1889        Zworykin Vladimir     physicist He played a role in the practical development of television from the early thirties, including charge storage-type tubes, infrared image tubes and the electron microscope, he died in 1982 at 92 years of age.

Science Birthdays, July 29

Today is the birthday of Isidor Rabi, born in 1898,  he discovered nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy or NMR. He died in 1988 at age 89.

Today is also the birthday of Charles Beebe, born in 1877 he was a biologist known for his deep dives in the bathysphere, he is considered one of the founders of ecology for his observations of deep sea creatures in their natural habitat, and his study of pheasants around the world, he died in 1962 at age 84.

Heinz Fraenkel-Conrat, born in 1910 was a chemist who discovered that the genetic control of viral reproduction in the tobacco mosaic virus was RNA and that it is carried in the nucleic core of the virus.  He died in 1999 at age 89.

Jim Marshall, born in 1910 was the founder of Marshall Amplification and is often called the “Father of Loud.” He was an electrical engineer, singer and drummer who built amplifiers so his singing could be heard over his drums. In 1949, he started teaching other drummers including Mitch Mitchell, Micky Burt, Mickey Waller and Mickey Underwood. He died in 2012 at age 88.

Dog Tip of The Day, July 28

Anytime you train a dog, three minutes of reward with a high pitched squeaky voice and a favorite toy is the secret.  If you don’t do that you are doing it wrong.

Science Birthdays, July 28

Today is the birthday of Earl Tupper, born in 1907, after failing in business he got a job at Dupont Chemical Company. They gave him some pieces of polyethylene slag, Tupper took the inflexible slag, purified it and formed it into bowls and lids.  Today it is called Tupperware.  He divorced his wife, gave up his U.S. citizenship to avoid taxes, sold the company and bought an island in Costa Rica.

Today is the birthday of Friedrich Dorn, born in 1848, he was the first person to discover that a radioactive substance radon was emitted from radium. He called it emanation, it was renamed radon by an international body of scientists.

Science Birthdays, July 26

Today is the birthday of Robert Remak, born in 1815, he is responsible for the three germ layer tissue theory: endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm. He also discovered unmyelinated nerve fibers in the heart called Remak’s ganglia, he discovered that the origin of cells in by cell division of preexisting cells.

Today is also the birthday of Paul Walden, born in 1863, he invented the walden inversion in stereochemistry, he died in 1957 at age 93.

Carl Jung was born in 1875, he was a psychiatrist who founded analytical psychology, he proposed the concept of introverted and extroverted personalities.

Science Birthdays, July 25

Today is the birthday of Rosalind Franklin, born in 1920, her data on X-Ray diffraction of DNA led to the Watson and Crick discovery of the double helix. Unpublished drafts of her papers show that she had determined the structure of DNA, yet her work was only vaguely acknowledged. She should get credit for the discovery of the DNA double helix, and someday she will.  She died in 1958 at the age of 38.

Today is also the birthday of Christop Scheiner, born in 1575, he invented the pantograph, he died in 1650 at the age of 75.

David Douglas, born in 1799 was a biologist and explorer, he explored the Scottish Highlands and Hawaii.  The Douglas Fir tree is named after him as well as many plants in Hawaii.  Over 80 trees have douglasi as a species in their scientific name.  He died in 1834 at the age of 35.
